Khuzestan Province

The province of Khuzestan, the cradle of many of ancient civilizations, is located in the south west of Iran. It is the most richest oil province in Iran. The River Karoon, the longest river in Iran, passes through this province and makes it a very fertile land in which a variety of fruits, vegetables and grains are produced.

Because of its geographical position, being an extension of the alluvial plains of Mesopotamia, lowland Khuzestan was sometimes brought within the cultural orbit of Mesopotamia.

Ahwaz is the capital city of Khuzestan, a city located on the banks of the River Karoon. Khuzestan province has as many as 20 cities which are listed below.

Two of the most famous historical sites in Iran are located in the vicinity of Shush (Susa) which are Chogha-Zanbil and Darius Palace. I've prepared a beautiful album about Khuzestan historical places and the related archaeological findings, please click here and enjoy it.

During my visit to Louver Museum, I found a wonderful section about Iran, specially about my area.

It is worth mentioning that some of the used pictures in this site are taken from Microsoft Encarta 2001 and IRANIA packages.
