Shadegan

The town of Shadegan in the south of Khuzestan, north of Abadan, is irrigated by Jarrahi river, branched form the two rivers of Maroon and Alaa, in its way down from Manghesht Mountains. Its old name had been "Darauk" which was the combination of the words "Daga", meaning owner, and "Ark", meaning Fortress and had been Arabicized to "Douragh". Abu-Dalaf, the Arab expeditioner of the 4th century A.H., mentioned the buildings and firealters built by Ghobad-ibn-Dara, the Sassanid king, in Shadegan. Ibn-Hooghal, Estakhri and Yaghoot Hemavi praise the fine brocade curtains and other elegant textiles and also mention the existence of hot sulfurous waters in this region.
